Initially, many cats were called "tigers" (the name comes from the English "tiger" - tiger). But it was possible to get a cat that would really look like the lord of the jungle thanks to breeder Judy Sagen. It was she who came up with the idea to bring a cat, which would be as similar as possible to a tiger.

Selection work began with a cat named Millwood, in whose veins blood flowed bengal cat and cats of the Indian breed, which had spots between the ears. Breeders Anthony Hutcherson and Alice McKee also contributed to the breeding of this breed by crossing with various breeds. It was they who came up with the idea to breed a domestic cat, similar in appearance to a tiger, with an elongated body and a characteristic color with spots in the form of stripes and rosettes.

The international association began registering this breed in 1993, but officially the Toyger breed appeared in 2000. But full recognition happened not so long ago - in 2007. True, only the International Association TICA recognized the breed at the official level. First of all, this is due to the fact that most members of various associations are inclined to believe that the toyger is not an individual breed, but a cat bred by crossing a wide variety of cat breeds. Therefore, according to some, it is impossible to define a clear breed standard, which is the reason why other associations do not recognize the Toyger.

As already mentioned, a toyger is a great choice for almost any family that wants to have a loyal and reliable friend with whom adults and children will have fun. Cats of this breed do not have a special personality (in terms of behavior), so they rarely show character and disposition.

Toygers can be trained, but for this you need to show patience and perseverance. A cat of this breed is calm, but not averse to playing and having fun. You can often see a picture when a small tiger cub climbs onto the shoulders of its owner and family members. Toyger is not suitable for those who are not ready to give attention and warmth to their pet.

Caring for a toyger cat is not difficult. Most owners brush their pet with a special brush only once a week. This amount is quite enough, since toygers are not prone to heavy molting.

Do not forget about the need to trim the claws. This should be done on average once every one and a half to two weeks. If the pet often walks on the street, then it is likely that the claws will wear down naturally. All cats are prone to developing genetic diseases in the same way that humans are prone to acquiring hereditary ailments. As for the toyger, this breed is considered to be relatively healthy.

Most representatives of this variety of cats have a heart murmur. It indicates the presence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in the animal. Other significant genetic abnormalities in the toyger, as a rule, are not observed.

Another ailment that can be avoided very easily with proper and sufficient care, as well as with the proper organization of the pet's diet, is obesity. You should regularly monitor your pet's weight and feed only those foods that are recommended by the veterinarian.

In general, the key to good health for your kitten will be to buy it from a trusted, serious breeder. Be sure to require all medical documents for young animals. All self-respecting animal breeders have health certificates.

It is impossible to foresee all the health problems that a pet may have. It is necessary to carry out scheduled medical examinations at least once every six months. At the first manifestation of atypical behavior of the animal or any other signs of an unhealthy condition, you should contact your veterinarian. Timely diagnosis will help to quickly cope with the disease and prevent possible complications that often occur with untimely medical care.
