The lion, of course, is the king of beasts, but the tiger is the most majestic of all the big cats, which, unfortunately, is in danger of extinction. In order to keep the tiger, so to speak, in miniature, the breeders decided to breed a cat that would look like this formidable and at the same time beautiful animal. This idea was embodied in a completely unique breed - the toyger.Тойгер

Brief description of the breed

Watching how kittens toyger sneak around the living room, you really think that this is not a cub of a domestic cat, but a real tiger, but, fortunately, he will not grow up and eat you. Toygers have a pleasant to the touch coat of bright orange color with special black markings, similar to those of a tiger. At the same time, the area of \u200b\u200bthe abdomen of this cat has a light shade.

Toygers have a gentle, calm nature, as a rule, they are all friendly. Representatives of this breed are easy to accustom to walks on a leash. At the same time, they are quite energetic, enjoy playing mobile, interactive games, but show friendliness to other animals, and even to dogs.

Toyger is a great choice for a family with children, but the interaction of the animal with small family members should be supervised by adults. Toyger will become a true friend for any family that is ready to give the animal its warmth and love. Like most other thoroughbred cats, the toyger is very smart. He is very curious and loves toys.

In care, cats are also not particularly picky. A weekly brushing will suffice to keep the coat in good condition. You will also need regular trimming and nail trimming.

The friendliness inherent in this breed makes the toyger an excellent pet for families who have other pets in the house, including dogs. Many owners of toygers successfully engage in training, thanks to which the cat can perform various tricks inherent in circus animal actors.

It is best to purchase a kitten from breeders who raise young at home. In this case, it would be useful to visit the breeder's house several times before finally making a purchase decision. This is necessary in order to make sure that the kitten behaves well, as well as to make sure that your future pet is in good health. It will also be useful to see the mother of the kitten, because the general condition of the little cat depends on the parents.

Toyger cat history

Initially, many cats were called "tigers" (the name comes from the English "tiger" - tiger). But it was possible to get a cat that would really look like the lord of the jungle thanks to breeder Judy Sagen. It was she who came up with the idea to bring a cat, which would be as similar as possible to a tiger.

Selection work began with a cat named Millwood, in whose veins blood flowed bengal cat and cats of the Indian breed, which had spots between the ears. Breeders Anthony Hutcherson and Alice McKee also contributed to the breeding of this breed by crossing with various breeds. It was they who came up with the idea to breed a domestic cat, similar in appearance to a tiger, with an elongated body and a characteristic color with spots in the form of stripes and rosettes.

The international association began registering this breed in 1993, but officially the Toyger breed appeared in 2000. But full recognition happened not so long ago - in 2007. True, only the International Association TICA recognized the breed at the official level. First of all, this is due to the fact that most members of various associations are inclined to believe that the toyger is not an individual breed, but a cat bred by crossing a wide variety of cat breeds. Therefore, according to some, it is impossible to define a clear breed standard, which is the reason why other associations do not recognize the Toyger.

Toyger cat character

As already mentioned, a toyger is a great choice for almost any family that wants to have a loyal and reliable friend with whom adults and children will have fun. Cats of this breed do not have a special personality (in terms of behavior), so they rarely show character and disposition.

Toygers can be trained, but for this you need to show patience and perseverance. A cat of this breed is calm, but not averse to playing and having fun. You can often see a picture when a small tiger cub climbs onto the shoulders of its owner and family members. Toyger is not suitable for those who are not ready to give attention and warmth to their pet.

If there are other pets in the house, then from the first days it is necessary to begin the process of socialization. First of all, it will be with communication with other animals. In the future, this will become the key to the friendly relations of a new family member with other pets.

Maintenance and care

Caring for a toyger cat is not difficult. Most owners brush their pet with a special brush only once a week. This amount is quite enough, since toygers are not prone to heavy molting.

Do not forget about the need to trim the claws. This should be done on average once every one and a half to two weeks. If the pet often walks on the street, then it is likely that the claws will wear down naturally. It will also help reduce the frequency of this procedure. cat scratching post, which can be purchased at any pet store or made independently.

Ears are a very vulnerable organ in most pets. Therefore, the owner of the cat needs to carry out a thorough check of their condition on a weekly basis. There should be no irritation, infection, various contamination or atypical discharge. As a preventive measure, it is necessary to treat the ears with a special solution prescribed by a veterinarian, but it can also be done independently. It is enough to dilute vinegar with water in a ratio of one to one. The use of a cotton swab to clean the ears should be avoided as it can damage the pet's ear canal.

Brushing your teeth will help to avoid the occurrence of stomatitis and a number of infectious diseases that occur in the animal's oral cavity with insufficient hygiene. Use a special toothpaste for this, best on the recommendation of a veterinarian.

Health and disease

All cats are prone to developing genetic diseases in the same way that humans are prone to acquiring hereditary ailments. As for the toyger, this breed is considered to be relatively healthy.

Most representatives of this variety of cats have a heart murmur. It indicates the presence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in the animal. Other significant genetic abnormalities in the toyger, as a rule, are not observed.

Another ailment that can be avoided very easily with proper and sufficient care, as well as with the proper organization of the pet's diet, is obesity. You should regularly monitor your pet's weight and feed only those foods that are recommended by the veterinarian.

In general, the key to good health for your kitten will be to buy it from a trusted, serious breeder. Be sure to require all medical documents for young animals. All self-respecting animal breeders have health certificates.

It is impossible to foresee all the health problems that a pet may have. It is necessary to carry out scheduled medical examinations at least once every six months. At the first manifestation of atypical behavior of the animal or any other signs of an unhealthy condition, you should contact your veterinarian. Timely diagnosis will help to quickly cope with the disease and prevent possible complications that often occur with untimely medical care.
